Enjoy the Steps, not just the Destination

Updated: May 10, 2022

Have you ever had so much to do that all you can think about is "what you have to do"? Yes? Me too! When that happens, it is so easy to get consumed by whatever it is that we are thinking about.

Lately, I have been trying to juggle a million things at a time. Literally! Every time my schedule changes, it takes some time for me to adjust. If you know me personally, you probably know that I like to put every single date in my calendar and create to-do lists. But, sometimes I just don’t get to do them and it frustrates me. I like to have things done a certain way and find it difficult to adjust when things are not going "my way". A friend of mine told me that you don’t have to do everything all at once, you can do things little by little too. And that sentence, changed everything for me in this current season of my life.

Friend, you truly do not have to do everything all at once, especially if that means you are not enjoying the journey. No matter what your plan is or what your destination is, you can enjoy the steps, the little moment. (In another article, I will be talking about joy, the journey, and the source of joy.) But, if you are too busy trying to get to your destination, then how will you enjoy it.

When you are dating, enjoy this step, don't be so consumed about the thought of being engaged, you are not engaged yet. When you are engaged, don't be so consumed about the thought of being married, you have a lifetime for that. When you are in an entry-level position, don't be so consumed about being at the top. You have a lot to learn in your position. The list can go on and on and on. My favorite example is being a student. As an undergrad, I wanted to move fast to graduate and I did not always get the best result. I got to slow down get involved and enjoyed my life as an undergrad.

I use to think that slowing down meant not doing enough or simply being lazy. For someone that has done things the fast way without enjoyment and slower with enjoyment, I can tell you that it is not worth it not to enjoy.

Enjoy life!

We hear all the time that we only live once, but are we living as such?

Are you actually living or are you just checking boxes in your daily life?

Life is an adventure! Every day is a gift from God; let us focus on living the present instead of being consumed by tomorrow. This article is not telling you to not strive, it is suggesting that you enjoy life as you do it.

Take some time to reflect and think outside of the box to see how you can enjoy the steps in your journey better.
