Anointed VS Appointed

I have been studying 1 Samuel for the past few weeks. I know I added a snippet of what captured my attention in my last newsletter, but this part that God revealed to me needed its own article.

Anointed vs Appointed. The day we get anointed by God is not necessarily the day He will appoint us to lead. David was anointed, and he continued to do what he was doing during the time he was anointed. Oftentimes, we see we have the gifts and we want to put it on display right away. We want to be recognized. We want to see where God is going to take us. We want to be appointed. But NO! God is saying first we must tend to the sheep. We must learn how to serve; we must serve our leaders. Let's look at the life of David.

  1. The first time David was introduced, he was referred to as the youngest son of Jesse who was tending the sheep (1 Samuel 16:11). He was glowing with health (1 Samuel 16:12). He was referred to many other times after this.

  2. The second time, he was anointed and the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully on him (1 Samuel 16:13).

  3. The third time, as the son of Jesse of Bethlehem, he was described as someone who:

    1. knows how to play the lyre

    2. is a brave man

    3. is a warrior

    4. speaks well

    5. is fine-looking

    6. and the Lord is with him (1 Samuel 16:18)

  4. The fourth time, King Saul said, "Send me your son David, who is with the sheep." (1 Samuel 16:19)

  5. The fifth time, King Saul said, "Allow David to remain in my service, for I am pleased with him." (1 Samuel 16:22)

  6. The sixth time, David played the lyre for Saul, and he got better (1 Samuel 16:23).

  7. The seventh time, David was still referred to and introduced as the youngest son of Jesse, the one who tends to the sheep (1 Samuel 17:12-15).

David's journey was not a short one no matter how gifted he was. Are you called to ministry? Great, serve your pastors and elders faithfully. Serve the people around you. Are you called to serve at a higher level in leadership at work? Great, serve your current boss or leader with no strings attached. Have their best interest at heart without wanting or expecting anything in return. Be the best at what you do. You don't have to look to place yourself in a higher position. What the Lord placed in your hands to nurture will make room for you if you do it faithfully.

David's stewardship of what the Lord had given him was his entrance to the service of the king. He played the lyre, he was a brave warrior, he was well-spoken, and the Lord was with him. The most important thing to note here is that "the Lord was with him." All the attributes I listed above are things that take time. It takes time to become a brave warrior. It takes practice to become a great speaker. Good things take time. There are places that God needs to take you that require you to spend a while tending to the sheep. You may need some time to master your craft.

In the lineage of Jesus, this is how David was introduced:

Matthew 1:6 “and Jesse the father of King David.” In the lineage of Jesus, he was referred to as King David.

Studying 1 Samuel has pulled my heartstrings. God really opened my eyes to see all the things He wants me to keep doing no matter what His calling for my life is. I can't be in more of a hurry than Him because I know His plans are greater than mine. His timing is perfect. God already dealt with me. Can I ask you a few questions?

  • What has God called you to do?

  • What anointing do you have?

  • What are you GREAT at?

  • What skills is God calling you to master right now while you wait?

  • Are you tending to your sheep, or do you want to be in the spotlight right now?

  • Are you serving your leaders?

  • Are you consistent?

These are a few questions I had to wrestle with. My prayer for you today is that you will feel a tug on your heart to go to the Lord and ask Him to reveal your gifts to you. My prayer is that you will focus on tending to your sheep and not worry about the glory. At the right time, you will be addressed by your "anointing," just like David was referred to as King David in the lineage of Jesus. Go tend the flock, friend!
